- Studybook at studybook.dev is a small, invite-only service run by Jord. It is not a company and has no adverts or tracking.
- It stores your account details and your notebooks so that you can use them on every device.
- When you use the AI features, the notes involved are sent to Anthropic's Claude service to be processed.
- Your data is never sold or shared for marketing. You can ask for a copy of it, or for it to be deleted, at any time.
Who looks after your data
Jord runs this Studybook and is responsible for your data. Contact: [email protected].
What Studybook stores
- Your account: your name, your email address, and when you created the account and agreed to these terms. Your password is never stored, only a scrambled version of it (a "hash") that cannot be turned back into the password.
- Two-step sign-in: if you turn it on, the key your authenticator app uses (stored encrypted) and scrambled versions of your recovery codes.
- Your notebooks: notebooks, sections, notes, pictures and scanned pages, practice questions, your quiz answers and results, and fact-check results. The server also keeps a daily safety copy of each account's notebooks for 14 days.
- Signed-in devices: for each device you sign in on, the type of browser and system (for example "Chrome on Android"), its internet (IP) address, and when it signed in and was last used. This lets you see and sign out your devices, and lets Studybook warn you about new sign-ins.
- Your Claude API key, if you add one, stored encrypted, plus a running total of what your AI use has cost.
- Server records: a technical log of events such as sign-ins, failed sign-in attempts, emails sent and errors, used to keep the service secure and working.
Why it is used
Only to provide Studybook to you: to sign you in, keep your notebooks in sync, run the features you choose, keep your account secure, and send you emails about your account. Under UK data protection law, the basis for this is that it is needed to provide the service you asked for, and the legitimate interest in keeping it secure.
Who else handles your data
- Anthropic (Claude): when you use question writing, explanations, reading scans or handwriting, or fact-checking, the notes or pictures involved are sent to Anthropic's Claude API, and fact-checks may search the web for the statements being checked. Anthropic's own privacy policy applies to that processing. If you don't use the AI features, nothing is sent.
- The hosting company: Studybook runs on a rented server, so the company that provides that server stores the data on Jord's behalf.
- An email sending service: if email is switched on, your name and email address are passed to it to deliver Studybook's emails.
Nobody else receives your data, unless the law requires it.
Who can see your notebooks
Other accounts cannot see your notebooks. Jord manages the server, so has technical access to what is stored on it, but will only look at your data if you ask for help, to fix a problem, or if the law requires it.
Cookies and browser storage
Studybook uses one cookie, which keeps you signed in. It is essential, so there is no cookie banner. Your browser also stores a few preferences, such as dark mode, and a page to show when the server can't be reached. There are no analytics, advertising or tracking cookies.
How long it is kept
Your account and notebooks are kept until you ask for them to be deleted. Signed-in devices are removed when you sign them out, or after 90 days without use. Password reset links last an hour. Backups that Jord downloads to keep the service safe can hold a copy of your data until they are replaced.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of your data, ask for anything wrong to be corrected, ask for your account and everything in it to be deleted, or object to how your data is used. Email [email protected]. You can also make your own copy of any notebook at any time in Settings, Backups. If you are unhappy with how your data is handled, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Security
Studybook is only reachable over an encrypted (https) connection. Passwords are hashed, API keys and two-step sign-in keys are encrypted, repeated wrong passwords are slowed down, and the server installs security updates automatically. No system is perfectly secure, so use a password you don't use anywhere else and turn on two-step sign-in.
Children
If you are under 13, a parent or guardian should set up your account and agree to this policy for you.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date, and you'll be told about any important changes when you next use Studybook or by email.
